What Is OTP SMS?
An OTP SMS is a short numeric code sent to a mobile number to prove that the person using it controls that number. It is the message a customer receives when they log in, complete a signup, authorise a payment or reset a password, and it is usually valid for only a few minutes.
Because it is a service message rather than marketing, an OTP is treated differently to a promotional campaign under Indian telecom rules. It reaches numbers on the DND register, it can be sent at any hour, and it does not require the DLT template approval that a promotional SMS does, so an account can start sending far sooner.
What matters most for an OTP is speed and consistency. A code that arrives after the customer has given up is the same as a code that never arrived, which is why OTP traffic is carried on high priority routes rather than the routes a bulk campaign uses.
